My Journey from Cadet College to Computer Science
Growing up in a disciplined environment shaped by the traditions of Cadet College, I learned the values of structure, resilience, and leadership early on. Marching in formation, waking up before sunrise, and living by a strict schedule taught me how to push through discomfort and stay focused under pressure.
Discovering a New Passion
But somewhere between drill parades and academic routines, I found myself drawn to something entirely different — technology. It started with curiosity: how do websites work? What powers the apps we use every day? That curiosity quickly turned into late-night coding sessions, tutorials, and a growing fascination with problem-solving through programming.
Making the Leap
Transitioning from a military-style education to the world of computer science wasn't seamless. The shift from physical discipline to intellectual exploration required a mindset change. But the habits I built at Cadet College — focus, consistency, and self-motivation — became my greatest assets when learning Python, building projects, and debugging code at 2am.
Finding My Voice in Tech
Today, I channel that discipline into building data pipelines, automating tasks, and working on machine learning projects. I competed at the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 and earned Runner-Up recognition. I built a production-ready Retail Sales ETL Pipeline. I write about what I learn. The same drive that kept me standing straight on a parade ground now keeps me pushing through hard problems in Python and data engineering.
Advice for Fellow Students
If you're coming from a non-traditional background — military, arts, commerce — don't let that stop you. Your unique experiences are your strength. The tech world benefits from diverse perspectives, and that background shapes how you approach hard problems differently from everyone else.
Start small, stay consistent, and let your curiosity lead the way. From Cadet College to computer science, my journey has been anything but typical — and that's exactly what makes it worth writing about.
